Wardrobe Secrets for your next family portrait

When families call to book a photo shoot with me the number one question I get asked is …“What should we wear?”.

Well, I’ll let you in on a little secret.

You don’t have to match… just make sure you coordinate. I love the classic jeans and white or black shirts, it’s timeless and never goes out of style. However, when you have young children in your family, those little people have a style all of their own.

If your children are anything like my 3 year old, there is no way they are going to want to come dressed in anything other than their favorite dress up costume and gumboots!  Although this look may capture their personality beautifully in a solo portrait, it’s not going to match the rest of the family for your group photos. Don’t become stressed out that you don’t all have matching tops, or go out and spend money on outfits you know the kids are NEVER going to wear again. Instead, pick a colour scheme you’re all happy with and stick to it.

Below is a colour schemes chart that you can use as a guide for your next family portrait. Alternatively, if you are having Autumn photos, dress in seasonal colours. The same goes for winter… you would be surprised how beautiful a bland colour scheme like grey/black and white look when it includes scarves and beanies.
